Anyone who’s given any thought to the costs of being arrested and convicted of DUI knows that there will be fines, court costs, DUI school, probation, even jail time, and of course, attorney’s fees. But have you any idea of the consequences to your car insurance? Chances are, you haven’t even considered it.
If you are convicted of DUI, your car insurance rates, assuming your company won’t cancel your policy outright, will likely be your most expensive consequence, even more so than your lawyer.
The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee will label you a ‘high-risk’ driver. They will send you a letter informing you that you must provide to them an ‘FR-44.’ This is a certification that comes directly from your insurance company that you had at the time of your arrest, or are purchasing now, 100/300 ($100,000.00 coverage for one person/$300,000.00 coverage per accident no matter how many persons) coverage. This is an expensive form of coverage that many vehicle owners do not carry (lease-holders are required to have it as a matter of course already). The typical cost of a 100/300 policy for ‘non-high-risk’ drivers is about $1000.00 per year. An FR-44 will cost a driver convicted of DUI more than THREE TIMES that much. And, it must be maintained for 3 YEARS. So if there is no other reason to avoid a DUI conviction, consider what it will cost you to continue to be able to drive the streets of Florida for the next three years.
This is yet one more reason to hire an experienced Florida DUI lawyer to review your case immediately. Contact Lloyd Golburgh, P.A. today for a free consultation.
